ITINERARY
Day 01

Cusco – Pilcopata Paraíso Lodge

Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to begin our journey through the Andean mountains, beautiful landscapes, and folkloric rural communities like Paucartambo and Ninamarca (funerary tombs) belonging to the pre-Incan Lupaca culture. Then we will climb the last mountain to reach Acjanaco, the entrance to Manu National Park, from where we will descend into the lush cloud forest, habitat of large variety of flora and fauna. It is an ideal place for epiphytes, orchids, bromeliads, and more. Here, we will explore the cloud forest and have the opportunity to observe Peru’s national bird, the colorful Andean Cock-of-the-rock, in its ritual mating dance, as well as toucans, trogons, quetzals, monkeys, and, with luck, the spectacled bear (Tremantus ornatus). Continuing our day trip, we head to the Patria Valley and the small villages of Pilcopata in Manu National Park.

Overnight and dinner at the comfortable Pilcopata Paraíso Lodge.

Day 02

Pilcopata Paraiso – Santa Rosa de Huacaria Native Village

Early in the morning, we will wake up with the songs of Amazonian birds that approach our garden, including toucans, macaws, parrots, tanagers, flycatchers, and more. After this fantastic activity, we will enjoy breakfast at the lodge.

After this fantastic moment we will drive in our private vehicle along the only road through the forest to the territory of Huacaria native village. Upon arrival, we will be welcomed by the chief and the families. This day will be dedicated to exploring the indigenous Amazonian cultures of Manu. There are at least five recognized indigenous Amazonian groups in Manu, each with its own language, methods of gathering, hunting, fishing, religious rituals, and traditional medicine. These groups have varying degrees of contact with civilization.

Activities include:

fishing in the rivers, harvesting crops, archery and arrow shooting, crafting items such as necklaces made from palm seeds, swimming in the Amelia River lagoon with schoolchildren, and storytelling of Matsigenka and Huachipaery origin myths and legends by the village leader. Participants will also learn about the use of medicinal plants, meditation, and chance  to connect with the energy of the plants.

Their diet is based on yucca, plantains, and some delicious traditional dishes, such as: Patarashca (fish prepared in bijao leaves), Pacamuto (fish prepared inside bamboo), Juane (rice and chicken wrapped in bijao leaves and steamed), Ahumado (smoked meat or fish), Palm heart salad (made from the heart of palm trees), and Suri (the larvae of a type of beetle that feeds exclusively on dead palm trees). Overnight stays are in tents with campfires, and meals will be prepared by the tour group and local families. Optional activity: ayahuasca ceremony.

Overnight stay in tents assigned by host families in a safe and peaceful environment.

Day 03

Santa Rosa de Huacaria Native Village – Eco Manu Lodge

After a typical breakfast prepared by the family with organic products, it will be time to say goodbye to the guardians of the Amazon for the time and experience shared in the home of the Matsigenka and Huachpaeri peoples. We will return to the village of Pilcopata and from there head to Atalaya river port and then bay boat to Eco Manu Lodge.

On the way to the port, we will visit the Pico de Oz hummingbird garden. Thanks to the great diversity of native flowering plants and feeding areas, dozens of species of hummingbirds and other bird species are attracted, including the Austral Parakeet, the White-crowned Night Heron, the White-throated Tanager, the Honeycreeper, the Dachnis, the King vulture, etc.  through the trails we may observe groups of monkeys and sloths.

In the afternoon, we begin exploring the lush Amazon rainforest along its various trails, admiring the giant rubber trees, tonillo trees, and ficus trees, which are home to groups of capuchin monkeys, woolly monkeys, howler monkeys, and dozens of bird species, including colorful parrots, parakeets, woodpeckers, toucans, and more. These can be observed from our exclusive observation tower, a beautiful platform high above the forest.

As darkness falls, it’s time to prepare for a short but fantastic nighttime activity. With the help of our guides and flashlights, we can spot owls, night monkeys, olingos, and armadillos. Along the riverbanks and in the wetlands within the forest, we can observe small caimans, water snakes, various frogs, tarantulas, and hundreds of nocturnal insects. Dinner and overnight stay at our comfortable EcoManu Lodge.

Day 04

Eco Manu lodge

Early in the morning, we will board our boat and drive down the madre de Dios rive head to the small clay lick (a clay wall containing mineral salts), a very important feature of the area, where many noisy parakeets, parrots, and small green macaws ingest the clay as part of their diet.

After this fantastic spectacle, we will enjoy a healthy breakfast outdoors on the banks of the Madre de Dios River. Continuing our Amazon expedition, we will head to the important Machuwasi Lake. With the help of a telescope and binoculars, we will observe a wide variety birds such as herons, hawks, ducks, hoatzins, oropendolas, families of capybaras (the world’s largest rodent), and, with luck, an impressive boa constrictor or anaconda. Return to Eco Manu Lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the mammal clay lick, a very special place in the Amazon rainforest. After a 35-minute walk through the forest, we will reach the hideout, and while the day

As darkness falls, a truly fascinating and unforgettable experience begins.

Night hikes and other activities are available every evening and will be arranged by our guides.

Day 05
